Fiction, Food, and Foolishness
Liar, Liar, Pants on Fire
LIAR, LIAR, PANTS ON FIRE!
If we want to admit it or not—we all lie. Let’s take a look at the different types.
White lies, which here in Texas we call fibs. They are the least serious of the group and are usually told to spare someone’s feelings. The last time I asked my husband if a pair of jeans made my butt look big, he replied, “Your butt is big.” A fib would have been welcomed in that instance.
And, who hasn’t claimed to like a gift when they really didn’t?
And what parent hasn’t lied about Santa, the Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy, oh, and let’s not forget that Elf on a Shelf!
Then, there are lies of omission…lying by either omitting facts or failing to correct a misconception.
Fabricated lies (rumors)…telling someone something you don’t know is true for sure.
Lying by exaggeration…enhancing a truth by mixing in untruths, usually to make ourselves look better.
Black lies…misleading someone with the intent of hurting them.
Bald-faced lies…undisguised and everyone knows they are untrue. (according to my research, it’s bald-faced and not boldfaced)
Surveys show people tell an average of 1 or 2 lies a day, but how do we know they aren’t lying about the number of times they lie! So I’m not so sure we can trust those numbers.
So, what do we lie about? Mostly, feelings, preferences, attitudes, and opinions right along with our accomplishments and failures. Then mix in lies about our actions, plans, and whereabouts. Many lies are told in romantic relationships. In all of my novels, someone almost always lies, and it causes big trouble! In my latest novel, due for release in May, the whole story centers around a lie.
As you read this, did you pat yourself on the back because you think you never lie? Think again. Ever had a garage sale and not claimed the proceeds as income on your taxes? Sell a car and not reveal every tiny little thing you know to be wrong with it? Call in sick to work when you weren’t?
Yeah, I thought so.

Luke Carlsson rushes home to tend to his ailing mother. Her lengthy illness means he needs to stay, at least temporarily. And to stay, he needs to work. Solace Lake Lodge offers him a job and an opportunity to work with the woman he’s never stopped loving. But the restoration is unleashing secrets hidden for decades and no one is left unscathed. “Luke?” Maggie’s voice was husky with sleep.
“It’s all right, baby. Go back to sleep.”
The sheets rustled and the bedside lamp snapped on, creating a small pool of light that illuminated her tense face. “You’re leaving?”
He heard the disappointment in her voice, saw it in her dark eyes, even in the dim light.
“If I don’t leave now, my grandmother will know I’ve been with you all night. Harper and Ethan will see my truck here in the morning, and they’ll know we slept together.”
“Harper and Ethan are staying in Minneapolis tonight, but even if they were home, it wouldn’t matter. I don’t give a damn what anyone thinks, not even my family. We’re grownups now. We don’t have to sneak around to be together like we did when we were kids.” She lowered her gaze, her hands clutching the sheet to her breasts. “Unless you don’t want anyone to know. Unless you’d rather not be here.”
“Maggie—”
“It’s okay, really.” She looked away and shrugged a small shoulder. “It’s no big deal.”
He couldn’t leave her like this. He sat on the bed beside her and stroked her hair. “It’s a big deal to me. There’s nothing I want more than to stay, but it wouldn’t be fair to you.”
Her eyes flashed in disbelief. “Wouldn’t be fair to me? What are you talking about?”
“In a few weeks, after my mother is…gone, I’ll go back to my job in California. And you’ll be here.”
“And never the twain shall meet?”
“It’s not what I want, but it’s reality.”
“What about what I want, right here, right now? Maybe we don’t have forever. Nobody does. If I’ve learned anything from your mother’s illness, it’s that we can’t take anything for granted. We can’t let uncertainty and fear stop us. If we only have a short time together, so be it. At least, we’ll have had that time. I won’t regret it.”
She was amazing. She was still the strong, forthright, vibrant girl he’d fallen in love with that summer.
And he had loved her. Deeply. They’d been far too young to sustain a lasting relationship. But that didn’t mean he hadn’t loved her.
I still love her. I never stopped.
The sudden insight rocked him.

Kryssie Fortune ~Abducted by Aliens?
Welcome Kryssie Fortune to Five on Friday. Get to know her by the five questions she chose to answer. Be sure and check out Kryssie’s books and follow her on social media. And…always review the books you read!
What are the top three things on your bucket list? And why?
1. Visit Split in Croatia. I love that the Roman Emperor Diocletian’s palace is not only still standing but is in daily use. I’d love to sit back and chill in such ancient surroundings.
2. See the Northern Lights. We tried for my birthday last year, but they turned shy and hid behind clouds. It was still one of the best nights of my life. We’d gone to an observatory to try to see them, and when it didn’t happen, they brought out their space rock samples. I touched the moon. For a girl who remembers the buzz of the moon landings, that meant the world.
3. Visit Sutton Hoo in Suffolk, England. I’d love to see their Viking Treasures and learn more of their history.
Ann: I’m always amazed at some of the things writers have on their bucket lists! Mine is boring compared to yours!
Do you have a secret? Something you’ve never told anyone…just answer yes or no.
Yes
Ann: I don’t think I’ve ever found anyone who doesn’t have a secret they’ve never told!!
Do you read horoscopes?
Yes. My favorite one told me I’d be abducted by aliens on my birthday. Didn’t happen, at least I don’t remember if it did.
Ann: I bet it did, Kryssie. They have ways of erasing your memory…you know.
If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be?
I love to travel, but two years ago we upped sticks and retired to the Yorkshire Coast. It was the best thing we ever did. I get to walk on the beach every day. The old song had it right.
It’s very nice to go trav’ling
To Paris, London and Rome
It’s oh so nice to go trav’ling,
But it’s oh so much nicer to come home.
Ann: Home is my favorite place to be.
If there was one person, real, fiction or fantasy, you could spend time with, who would it be and why?
I thought hard about this. Back in my childhood I was a real DC girl. Superman and Batman were fine, but Aquaman and Saturn Girl still hold a place in my heart. Back then, Saturn Girl could speak, so she’d be fun to chat with about the things she’d seen in space, while Aquaman could tell me about the Ocean’s deepest reaches. Choosing two is greedy, I know, but I’d take either.
Ann: Kryssie, you have one of the most interesting answers to this question I’ve gotten!

Excerpt
“How dare you embarrass me like that?” Harriet Mortlake planted her hands on her hips and glowered at the man she’d cornered outside the café. Her normal iceberg cool deserted her, and she wanted to slap the condescending smile off his face. Around this stranger, she felt as though lightning bolts flashed from her eyes.
“It’s a temple, not a chapel,” he insisted.
Stubborn. Damn. Male. She’d been showing the big guns from the Castles’ Management Trust around the building. They’d already made it clear they thought her too young for the archivist’s role. This know-it-all had infuriated her when he sounded off in the chapel. Now he antagonized her all over again.
“As if!” Harriet snorted. “No way would medieval Christians build a pagan temple on their grounds. Superstitious locals would have accused them of devil worship. They burned heretics at the stake, remember?”
Despite Mr. Condescending’s interference, she’d impressed the big bosses—she thought. Now the sexiest male, ever, clung to his ridiculous belief the chapel had been a pagan temple.
He flashed her a smile which would have lit up the underground chapel where he’d embarrassed her earlier. He should keep his mouth shut and let her admire his looks. Everything about him radiated sex appeal. Looking at him almost made her anger evaporate, but he gave her the know-it-all look that made her bristle.
“You need to get your facts right,” he told her, determined to have the last word.
Stupid, arrogant male. She couldn’t decide whether to show him her diplomas and degrees or kick his shins. She’d reined in her temper while the higher-ups carried out their inspection. Now they’d left, she felt free to vent her rage. Hands still on her hips, she tapped her foot at him.
“Lost for words without an audience? Or don’t you have any facts to back up your cock-and-bull story? Put up or shut up, Mister. Tell me why you think it’s a temple.”
Mr. Condescending sat outside the castle’s tearoom as if he hadn’t a care in the world. His interference when she’d shown the bigwigs into the chapel could have cost her the job she loved. Whitborough Castle’s extensive records needed cataloging, and Harriet couldn’t wait to get her hands on them.
Kryssie Fortune writes the sort of hot sexy books she loves to read. If she can sneak a dragon into her paranormal books she will. Her paranormal heroes are muscular werewolves, arrogant Fae or BDSM loving dragons.
Kryssie likes her contemporary heroes ex-military and dominant. Her heroines are kick ass females who can hold their own against whatever life – or Kryssie – throws at them.
Kryssie’s pet hates are unhappy endings, and a series that end on a cliff hanger. Her books are all stand alone even when part of series. Plot always comes before sex, but when her heroines and heroes get together, the sex is explosive and explicit. One review called it downright sensual.

Bullies of the Plant World
Did you know…
Birds and insects, sometimes depend on weed seeds for nourishment.
Native Americans often used dandelions to cure certain ailments. They have large amounts of Vitamin A, Vitamin C, calcium, and fiber and can even be used to make tea and wine.
Dollar weed, also known as pennywort, is an aquatic plant that can be used in salads.
Pigweed, or amaranth, can be harvested as a leafy vegetable, and its high-protein seeds can be cooked just like quinoa. Its root is a white, alkaline vegetable that is high in vitamins and minerals.
*************
Weeds cause more yield loss and add more to farmers’ production costs than insects, diseases, rodents, birds, deer and other grazers.
Weeds such as cheat grass can pave the way for rampant wildfires.
Weeds like ragweed can release a billion pollen grains per plant from August through October, triggering allergic reactions for 38 million Americans annually.
Water lettuce serves as a breeding ground for mosquitoes, which can carry diseases.
Common groundsel, often found in alfalfa fields, contains highly toxic alkaloids that can cause irreparable live damage if consumed by cattle, horses or sheep.
On Second thought, yank those suckers out of the ground and burn them!!!
