Viviana MacKade is featured today on Five on Friday. She shares her newest release, His Midnight Sun, book 3 in the Cresent Creek series.
Tormented, fierce, and broken, sculptor Aidan Murphy has judged himself guilty. He yearns for love but pushes everyone away. He longs for acceptance but has lost the key to open his heart. Summer’s managed to keep her inner light alive, even through tragedy. She’s created a new life for herself and her daughter in Crescent Creek with loving, caring and fun friends–well, except brooding, breathtaking Aidan. She’s used to keeping away from his type, though. All she has to do is ignore the pull of a man who’s turning up to be much more than snarls and storms. Will her compassion and medical instincts let her?

Beach bum and country music addicted, Viviana lives in a small Floridian town with her husband and her son, her die-hard fans and personal cheer squad. She spends her days between typing on her beloved keyboard, playing in the pool with her boy, and eating whatever her husband puts on her plate (the guy is that good, and she really loves eating). Besides beaching, she enjoys long walks, horse-riding, hiking, and pretty much whatever she can do outside with her family.

FIVE ON FRIDAY
You open your front door and find a penguin wearing a cowboy hat. What does he say?
“Hungover. Got lost. Got I map I can use?” Because really, I live in south Florida so there’s no way Penguin lives here. If he’s knocking at my door it’s because some other reason. Which leads me to the cowboy hat. On a penguin, it kind of screams bachelor/bachelorette party, if you ask me. Put those two things together and you’ll see how easy it is to get to him, being hungover and lost.
Ann: Great answer!
If you had to describe yourself in one word, what would it be?
Dunno. (See what I’ve done here? 3 words in one? Brilliant. And accurate. Who could ever describe herself or himself with just one word???)
Ann: That is brilliant!!
What is the most romantic thing a man/partner has ever done for you? Have you put it in a book?
I have a favorite teaspoon. It suffered many rounds with the garbage disposal and survived, but it bears scars. It’s a survivor who doesn’t care if the other newer, shinier teaspoons make fun of its looks. It knows its worth. So it’s my favorite. And my husband, every time he passes me a teaspoon or sets one on the table, always makes sure I have that one because he knows what it means to me. It’s a very simple gesture, but it gets me every time for the sweetness and the regard in it.
And no, I haven’t put in a book. Yet. But I think it will be the very opening of my next one.
Ann: I think it’s the small gestures that are the sweetest. Your hubby sounds like a great man!
Do you have any tattoos? If so, care to say what and where?
I have a scorpion on the inside of my left wrist. I wanted to have something linked to my husband (because marrying him and having a kid with him clearly is not enough to show I love him and all that). I don’t like names or dates for tattoos, and because his astrological sign is very right about him, I used that.
Ann: I love that the meaning of the tattoo is sort of hidden. Unless someone asks you about it, it’s like a sweet little secret between you and your honey. :+)
What were you like in high school? Popular or not?
No. Not popular, nor picked on. I’ve always minded my own business. I had school friends, but I didn’t hang out with them. My life was at the riding school I belonged to.
Ann: I think a 100% of the time, the answer to this question is “no”…I’m beginning to wonder if any author was ever popular in high school!
Do You Believe in Horoscopes?
Today, I welcome Janet Lane-Walters to Five on Friday where she answers five questions to reveal more about her personality. Interesting that she not only believes in horoscopes, but once raised money for a trip to Ireland by casting them!
The Leo Aquarius Connection
The nurses stare as he exits the elevator on the Pediatric Unit. “Enter the handsome doctor.” Those are Doctor Caleb Winstone’s words as he steps off the elevator. Though he’s embarrassed, this Leo doctor rolls with the punches.
He’s returned home to join an older doctor in the practice. Before long he learns the new nurse manager of the unit is a woman he knows. Of all the women in the world, she is the last one he wants to see. How can he manage to work daily with her? Before the day ends, he discovers his mother has decided who he should marry and the woman is quite willing. Not for him.
Suzanna Rollins is an Aquarian and now the guardian of her half-brother who was badly injured in a car accident. She takes the position as nurse manager of the Pediatric unit for several reasons. One is the move from the city re-unites her with college friends, the Grantley Gang. The other is for the excellent Rehab Center. On the day of her arrival, she encounters Caleb. What is he doing here and why? Can she work with the man she fell in and out of love with the night he offered her less than marriage?
Caleb’s interest in helping her half-brother gives them more together time than they imagined.
Five on Friday
If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be?
Maybe I’m strange but I love where I’m living, and years ago, when I first visited this Hudson River valley village, I said, “I have to live here.” Took a year, and my husband finding a job in the area before my dream came true. The village has been good for my family, allowing a son to pursue art in high school, something denied him where we lived before, and my youngest daughter, an adopted biracial child to stop being the token black. It’s also where I met writers who inspired me to develop my career. So there’s no other place in the world I’d rather live.
Ann: I’m just like you, Janet. I’m happy with where I live.
What are the top three things on your bucket list? And why?
Now, here comes the bit. I really don’t have a bucket list. The reason is there are some places I would like to go and things to do but aren’t possible in my life. I would love to take a trip to Mars. I’ve been fascinated by the red planet for years and am watching the things the Rover has discovered.
I would love to find a way to end the thought of wars forever and to have people learn to tolerate each other and their beliefs without trying to force everyone to see things their way.
I would love to find a way to cure all ills like cancer and starvation.
As you can see these are impossible for a bucket list but they’re mine.
Ann: Again, we have something in common. I also don’t have a bucket list.
Name the last three books you’ve read.
I have recently read The Beast Master’s Circus by Andre Norton, Malevolent IA Kendra Sparks Novel Book 2) by S. Peters Davis and The Seventh Plague: A Sigma Force Novel by James Rollins.
Ann: Those all sound interesting.
Do you read horoscopes?
Not only do I read horoscopes but at one point in my life a friend and I cast horoscopes and earned enough to take a trip to Ireland. She did the math part and I did the interpretation. I also use Astrology when casting my characters. I use the Sun Sign, the Moon Sign and the Ascendant to give me a picture of their nature, their emotional reaction and the face they show the world.
Ann: I don’t read horoscopes on a regular basis, but find them interesting when I do.
Name three people who influenced your life.
The first was my grandfather John Kirkland. He taught me to read when I was three years old and since then reading has been important in my life. The Second was my father Norman Lane who told me to shoot for the stars but if I hit the fence post, I had tried. He shared my books and writing with everyone he met. The third was Jane Toombs. She was a fellow member of our local RWA chapter. When I returned to writing after a ten-year exodus to work as a nurse, she vetted my book and sold the idea to her editor. We were friends until her death and collaborated on two books. The first Moon Pool, a series of novellas set in the same area and tied to a resort. The second is Words Perfect: Becoming Your Own Critique Partner.
Ann: I think family and friends influence most of us. We’re lucky to have their support. Sounds like you did.
Award Winning Janet lane Walters has been a published author since 1968 beginning with short stories and moving into novels when an editor told her a short story sounded like a synopsis for a novel. In the 1970s and 1980s she published 4 sweet nurse romance novels. Then she returned to school to earn a BS in Nursing and a BA in English. Returning to work as a nurse to help put four children through college she put her writing career on hold. In 1993 she retired from nursing and began writing again. A new nurse romance followed in print. Then she discovered electronic publishing and since 1998 has been electronically published.
Janet calls herself an eclectic writer since she moved from genre to genre. There are mysteries featuring Katherine Miller a former nurse who seems to stumble over bodies wherever she goes. Using Janet’s interest in Astrology, she has several series that use Astrology as a premise for the stories. Once, she earned enough money to travel to Ireland by casting charts for people. She has many books in the romance genre, some of them are contemporary and are nurse romance, others fall into the fantasy or paranormal forms of romance. Interested in reincarnation, she has used this as a jumping point for at least two novels. Two of her novels deal with alternate worlds using a love affair with Ancient Egypt.
Under her other name J.L. Walters she has written a YA fantasy series called Affinities. She has also written a non-fiction book with co-author Jane Toombs that won the EPIC Award in 2003 for best Non-fiction. During her career she has received other awards and has a number of great reviews.
Besides her four adult children, she has seven grandchildren. Five of them are the models for the YA series. The other two arrived too late to play a large role in the series. Four of her grandchildren are bi-racial and 3 are Chinese so the eclectic even invades her family. She has been married to the same man for more than 50 years. He’s a psychiatrist who refuses to cure her obsession for writing.

About Ghost of a Chance by McKenna Dean:
At sixteen, Sarah Atwell walked away from her love of horses and a promising career as a competitive rider after discovering she’d inherited the family curse. Years later, her grandmother stunned everyone by leaving Sarah her horse farm—worth millions—but with conditions Sarah might not be able to meet.
A former Redclaw agent, Casey Barnes retired when a security assignment went bad, killing his partner and leaving him as a partial amputee. His inner wolf is in hiding. He’s been living quietly as a horse trainer, but June Atwell’s death now pits him against her granddaughter for rights to the stable.
With both of them snowed in at the farm, a series of increasingly serious accidents draws Sarah and Casey closer together, but they both harbor secrets that might tear them apart.
Ghost of a Chance is a paranormal romance story.

Excerpt:
For some reason, he glanced back at Sarah where she waited by the door. The backlight of falling snow through the glass in the shadowed hallway created the suggestion of a black-and-white photograph. The only spot of color was the bright red scarf at the collar of her coat and the wine-dark lipstick she wore. She leaned against the wall with her eyes closed. Something inside him clicked, as though recognizing a scene from a movie. His heart stopped a beat, flipped over, and thudded again with increased intensity.
No. It couldn’t be. Not her.
He hurried away, head still reeling at his reaction.
When he returned with an armload of clothing, she was nowhere to be seen. Her laptop sat by her shoes, one pretty little pump turned over on its side. As expected, he discovered her in the living room, staring at the pictures on the wall. “There you are.”
She jumped at the sound of his voice.
“Sorry, didn’t mean to scare you.” He adjusted the heap of clothing piled over one arm and held out a pair of snow boots.
“She had so many photographs of me.” Sarah took the boots almost automatically, and indicated the walls covered with pictures, ones Casey had seen many times.
That had to be it. Why she felt so familiar. Why she seemed to be the one. Relief washed over him. Obviously he’d spent too much time alone if he thought Sarah Atwell was his destined mate.

McKenna Dean has been an actress, a vet tech, a singer, a teacher, a biologist, and a dog trainer. She’s worked in a genetics lab, at the stockyard, behind the scenes as a props manager, and at a pizza parlor slinging dough. Finally she realized all these jobs were just a preparation for what she really wanted to be: a writer.
She lives on a small farm in North Carolina with her family, as well as the assorted dogs, cats, and various livestock.
She likes putting her characters in hot water to see how strong they are. Like tea bags, only sexier.

Step Back into the Civil War
Help me welcome author, Kathy Otten to Five on Friday. Today, she shares one of her books, A Place in Your Heart. I love the cover! Be sure and check out her other novels. You’ll find them and more info about Kathy at her website link listed below.
Gracie McBride isn’t looking for love; she’s looking for respect. But in this man’s world of Civil War medicine, Gracie is expected to maintain her place changing beds and writing letters. Her biggest nemesis is the ward surgeon, Doctor Charles Ellard, who seems determined to woo her with arrogant kisses and terrible jokes.
Charles is an excellent surgeon. He assumed he would be well received by an army at war. He was not. Friendless and alone, he struggles to hide the panic attacks that plague him, while the only person who understands him is a feisty Irish nurse clearly resolved to keep him at a distance.
But, Charles is sent to the battlefield, and Gracie is left with a wounded soldier, a box of toys, and a mystery which can only be solved by the one man she wishes could love her, both as a woman and a nurse.
Excerpt
“No. I want you to go home before the death of that ten-year-old boy becomes so ordinary, that one day you wake up and realize you no longer have the ability to feel.”
She squared her shoulders and stepped toward him. “Me own husband was a doctor, sir. I’ve birthed babies and stitched wounds. I stood by William’s side during surgeries and passed him instruments. I helped him clean the intestines of a man gored by a bull, before putting it all back inside that man’s belly. Me delicate sensibilities did not send me into a swoon then nor will they here. I thank ye for yer concern, Doctor Ellard, but ’tis who I am. And by the saints, as long as I have breath in me body, I will feel, and I will care.”
Their gazes locked in that moment and something flickered in his icy depths, overshadowing his usual cynicism with what she suspected might be admiration.
The harsh lines of his face softened. “Saint Jude must indeed be watching over you, Mrs. McBride.”
“That he is, Doctor Ellard, that he is.” He gave her a brisk nod and opened the door.
“You’re not going home then, are you?”
She turned. “Ye know us Irish, Doctor Ellard. We don’t know what we want, but we’ll fight to the death to get it.”

You open your front door and find a penguin wearing a cowboy hat. What does he say?
“Hi, my name is Leo.”
Ann: Leo the penguin!!
If you had to describe yourself in one word, what would it be?
Procrastinator
Ann: I don’t believe that because you got your information to me early!!!
What’s the one thing you do every day that you enjoy the least, but do it anyway?
Clean the kitty box.
Ann: I don’t have Kitty’s, but my son does, and I refuse to clean the litter box! I feed the cats, but draw the line at the stinky stuff!
Do you belong to a critique group?
Yes, three of them, maybe four, sort of. One is a Round Robin through the mail, with some older ladies uncomfortable with emailing files. One weekly group, which digs deep into the nitty gritty. Another once a month near home, which is more of a pay-it-forward group of newer writers, and another monthly group, which if I can get the day off from work, I try to bring pages, because they are all thorough critiquers. I don’t think I’d ever get published without their intuitiveness of characters, understanding of plot, and technical grammar skills.
Ann: I yell a hardy AMEN to critique groups!!
What would you choose as your mascot/avatar/spirit animal?
For my spirit animal I would choose a river otter. When people used to ask how to spell our name, my dad would say, “Spell otter, then put a tail on the r.” I grew up in Vermont and Otter Creek was the major waterway through the area, which flowed into Lake Champlain, and had otters in it when I was a kid. I went to Otter Valley Union High School. When I got to college my nickname was, “Otter,” because I used my dad’s explanation when people asked me how to spell my name. I had a button from school clipped to my purse, which had a picture of an otter and said, Otter Power. People still send me pictures and videos of playful otters.
Ann: That’s funny. Because I’m a Texan, my answer is always the same to this question. I’d be an armadillo!!

Regan was just too damn alluring in that dress for him to accept that he couldn’t have her if he wanted her.
He was an idiot. He should have told her years ago. He should have told everyone. Despite the tongue- lashing he was silently giving himself, Tyler was certainly no fool. “The professor” to his friends, he was generally serious and professional. He had the smarts necessary to obtain both an MBA and a law degree, and he was now CEO of LHRE and on hiatus from one of the fastest growing tech companies in the country. He kept his cool in general, but again and again he behaved like an idiot around Regan.
Since that damn frog almost thirty years ago, he had loved no one but Regan. Sometimes they made it work together, like in high school, but most times not. His feelings were unchanged, but something always stopped him from declaring his love and asking her to do the same. This time it was something insurmountable.
And yet Tyler couldn’t stay away. He was the proverbial moth to the flame, flirting with disaster every time he flirted with her. He had promised to stay away, to keep her safe, but the attraction was undeniable. Yep, prize idiot.
Returning to the ballroom after the latest threats, Tyler briefly considered sharing the conversation, coming clean with Regan and perhaps moving their relationship forward. He was at a fork in the road but remained silent, Tyler knew he was on the wrong path but couldn’t summon the will to fix it. Not only were his problems unsolveable, but she was involved with Brandon. Tyler felt hopeless.
He was preoccupied just as Regan accused, but Tyler tried to give Regan the attention she deserved. He failed miserably until Regan suggested they just leave. That got his attention. Who knew when he would hold her in his arms again.
“Come dance with me again. It would be a crime to waste that dress.”
Encircling Regan in his arms, his body responded to her nearness, even as his mind worried over the earlier texts. He was unaware of his hand stroking her back, fingers lightly skimming over her bare skin. He wasn’t thinking clearly when he pulled her close or when he dropped kisses on her hair. He wasn’t paying attention, just acting on instinct, Regan was responding, her breath growing uneven, her hands clinging to his shoulders.
Madison Michael traded 28 years in Fortune 500 tech and management positions for a chance to spend her days with sassy heroines, sexy, rich heroes and nothing but happy endings. Growing up the daughter of a librarian, she learned to love books, especially classics and romances, and spent winters cuddled under blankets losing herself in books.
Madison is the author of three novels in the Beguiling Bachelor series, as well as several short stories. She is a member of Romance Writers of America.
After living in the northeast, southeast and the west, Maddy returned to her Midwest roots. She lives in Evanston, IL with two feline editorial assistants and great views of Chicago’s famous skyline.
