Vickie Phelps, Wheels of Justice

Today, I welcome Vickie Phelps to Five on Friday. Since it’s getting to look a lot like the holidays, Vickie even threw in some seasonal questions! Be sure and check all of her books out on Amazon, and follow her on social media.

When Connie Knight applies for a job at McKinney’s Fine Cars in her hometown of Redwood, Texas, she has no idea what she’s getting into. Buford McKinney is a mean, evil bully who thinks women are the ground God made for men to walk on. The only reason she stays at McKinney’s is the fear of being without a paycheck and ending up homeless. And then there’s Rick McKinney, Buford’s son. In spite of his daddy’s contempt for Connie, Rick is attracted to her and Connie to him. But will their feelings for each other be enough to keep Connie safe? Just how far will Buford go to get rid of her?

“Great book, read it through in one sitting since I couldn’t put it down.
Very real, strong characters, and a satisfying ending.”

FIVE ON FRIDAY

What is one strong memory that has stuck with you since childhood . . . and why?
When I was very young, about four or five, my dad’s brother lived with us on a farm in West Texas. We went to town one day and when we came home, my uncle had disappeared. We never saw or heard from him again. The memory is a bit hazy because of my young age, but I’ve always wondered about Uncle Joe and what happened to him. Why did he leave? Where did he go? Did he have a family? When I began writing, I knew I would write a story about him. That story became the novel, “Moved, Left No Address.”

Ann: I would have been sooo disappointed if you’d not said you’d written a book about him!

What is one of your favorite quotes?
“When I have a little money, I buy books; and if I have any left, I buy food and clothes.”
― Erasmus

Ann: I like that quote.

Do you sing in the shower or car? What type of music?
Both. If I’m in the shower, I usually sing a praise chorus. If I’m in the car, I usually sing
whatever is playing on the radio—usually fifties music.

Ann: If you’re like me, when I’m alone and singing…I’m quite the superstar!!

What is your favorite holiday song?
“I’ll Be Home for Christmas”

Ann: That is the one song that always makes me cry. Just seeing the title brought some emotions to the surface.

Would others classify you as Merry-Merry or Bah-humbug and why?
Probably Merry-Merry. I love Christmas and everything about it. I have tons of Christmas decorations and spread them all through my house.

Ann: For me, it would depend on the day if my Merry-Merry or Bah-humbug self emerged!

Liz Sanders, Christian Romance Author

Today, I welcome Liz Sanders to Five on Friday. Liz and I met years ago when I joined Northeast Texas Writing Organization, which just goes to prove you meet the greatest people in a writing group!! Be sure and leave a comment for a chance to win a $25 dollar Amazon gift card!!

Liz Sanders, author of Inspirational Romance and Mystery

Liz Sanders loves a good story. She grew up in the country on a small farm in Texas, where she loved reading and writing–and she still does! She is married to her real-life hero, and together they lead a quiet life. They have two daughters and their husbands, one son and his wife, and an adorable granddaughter.
Ms. Sanders writes inspirational romance. She earned a BA in English with academic distinction and concentration in writing fiction. She is published in multiple genres, including poetry, academic non-fiction, and fiction. She teaches at a public school in Texas.

Name some of your favorite books.

I was born in Dallas and since my father was in the military, we traveled around for about ten years before settling down in East Texas. Before I fell in love with writing, I loved reading. Truly, there is a blessing in growing up in the country with little television reception. So reading became my entertainment, and fortunately we had books. We had The Book of Knowledge, Trixie Belden, Rich Man, Poor Man, All the President’s Men, and so many other books I fell in love with.

Ann: Kids today are missing a lot of the simple life. Wouldn’t it be great if they had to live a week without technology?

What are who has influenced you most in your writing career?

I earned a BA in English at Texas A&M University-Commerce in 2002 with academic distinction, magna cum laude. (Can you tell I’m proud of that?) I learned the most about writing from two sources—my local newspaper office and a kick-butt English professor! I currently teach high-school-level English. Ultimately, anything and everything good in my life I owe to God and to my family, who have made unreasonable sacrifices for me to live my dream of writing novels.

Ann: Just think, someday many of your students will list you as an influence!

Tell us a little about the first book you’ve published.

My first book SHAKEDOWN! came out about a year ago. It is the first in my DIAMOND RIVER SERIES, and I the second book, SLIPPERY SLOPE, is in the making. The Diamond River Series is a saga about the CANE FAMILY—honest, hard-working people who own and manage an internationally famous resort in the fictitious community, Diamond River, Oklahoma.

Ann: Love your cover and the story sounds interesting. I hope many readers add it to their “to be read” list! I know I have!!

What is one of your favorite quotes?

One of my favorite quotations and mantras for life is a Greek philosopher’s “One must learn by doing the thing…” Isn’t that the truth! Although I dislike making mistakes, I love this saying because it reminds me that human perfection is elusive, and mistakes can teach me to do better and to be better. They are life “revisions.”

Ann: Unfortunately, the best lessons come from failures!

Name your favorite author.

My favorite writer is Sandra Brown. Her skillful precision in writing blows me away—the plot twists, the suspense, and the intrigue are mind-boggling. I want to write that well some day! I realize there is material in her books that is hard to read, but that is life, and I use that to refine my beliefs. Her book Chill Factor is my all-time fiction favorite, and I am currently reading Tailspin.

Ann: Sandra Brown is not one of my regular reads, but I have read her books, and I agree. She’s a skillful writer…and a Texan! You can’t beat  that combination!!

SHAKEDOWN! Book One of the Diamond River Series

Jory Cane has been hurt, so has Raine Whitehouse. Find out how God uses their past to create an unbelievable future.

Excerpt

“His eyes shone electric blue. ‘I love you,’ he said again as he leaned closer and kissed her, a determined kiss and her thoughts swirled. When he stopped, she opened her mouth to speak, but he brought up his hand in protest. ‘I’m not finished.’”

Amazon Customer Review: “Thoroughly enjoyed this book! So refreshing to read a great romance novel with real romance.”

Does Savvy McKay believe what she thinks she believes? Self-delusion is a slippery slope.

Thank you, Ann, for featuring me on your “Five on Friday” session. I first met you when you spoke at a writers’ conference in Texas. I laughed so much during your presentation, but I also learned a lot, too. I admire your wit and your ebullient, yet genuine, personality.

Five on Friday with Sorchia DuBois

Today, I welcome Sorchia DuBois back to my blog for  a Five on Friday feature. Be sure to check out her book and follow her on social media.

FIVE ON FRIDAY

Name three of your pet peeves.
1. Bad Grammar! I’m not a grammar Nazi who goes around correcting everyone but I do secretly judge. I appreciate unique wording and offbeat sentence construction—as long as the writer demonstrates an understanding of the rules. I mean, you have to know the rules to break them creatively, and I respect that. Of course, stuff happens. I’ve been guilty of hitting Send before I’ve proofread carefully. And, of course, English is a living language with constantly changing usage—that is wonderful. All that said, it’s pretty easy to tell when someone does not have a grasp of the basics, and, in most cases, I consider such discrepancies after high school cause for justifiable homicide.
2. Popping gum loudly in an enclosed space—also a reason to execute someone in the street.
3. Kind of related to #1, bad cursing. People who can’t curse creatively shouldn’t do it at all.

Ann: I am almost afraid to type a response to this first question for fear my grammar will be terrible!

Do you laugh at your own jokes?
Yep! Somebody has to. My family doesn’t always get me, but that’s no reason my fun has to be spoiled.

Ann: I also laugh at my own jokes!

Do you hide any secrets in your books that only a few people will find/recognize?
Yes, I do. I hide things I’ve written about in other books, from classic literature, from movies and pop culture, from my life (and I’m safe because no one in my family reads my books—well, maybe my sister so I don’t allude to her except in a nice way.) I love to read books with little Easter eggs secreted away inside the plot or the character descriptions, so I try to write that kind of book, too. My last book has poetry—all penned by yours truly—at the beginning of each chapter. I tried every poetic form I could including a sonnet and was rewarded when one reader commented on the sonnet. She is a former English teacher so she recognized the pattern and thought it was hilarious. That is what I live for!

Ann: A few of my “bad” guy characters are based on people I don’t like. I guess that’s a secret!

What is one of your favorite quotes?
“Time Flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana.” Words to live by from Groucho Marx.

Ann: I love that quote. I’d never heard it before.

 Do you read horoscopes?
I read my own horoscope every day—there’s an app for that—though I don’t hinge my life on it. I also read Tarot cards and I believe in the no-coincidences thing. I think horoscopes and other forms of divination are about 90% self-psychoanalysis—The act helps you make connects your subconscious has been trying to push forward. Whatever Force guides the Universe accounts for the other 10%.
Funny story: when I was the sponsor for a small-town high school newspaper, we used to do a horoscope column even though some of the highly religious community members objected. We told those people we wrote the column for fun and we made up the content—all true. But you would be amazed how many kids came to us and told us how accurate we were. One of our wackier forecasts for a particular day was to beware of a busload of nuns. Lo and Behold, one of our kids came to us with a story of meeting a bus filled with nuns on the highway on that very day. Our reputation soared and newspaper sales doubled.

Ann: Interesting story!

A proud member of the Scottish Ross clan, Sorchia DuBois incorporates all things Celtic (especially Scottish) into her works. She can often be found at Scottish festivals watching kilted men toss large objects for no apparent reason.

Magic may save Zoraida’s skin, but what about her heart?

Zoraida Grey needs help. With the witchy Logan clan holding her best friend hostage in a haunted Scottish castle, she can’t trust anyone—certainly not beguiling but dangerous Shea Logan. And Al, her overprotective boyfriend, doesn’t believe in magic.

Only one creature strikes fear in the blackened hearts of the Logan witches. Trouble is Jock disappeared five centuries ago leaving a trail of destruction across the Gulf of Mexico. Now he’s stepped into a steaming pile of Voodoo.

Can Zoraida drag wayward Jock back to Scotland? And what’s she supposed to do with two men who promise completely different futures?

A Scottish wizard, stripped naked and painted blue—a Voodoo priestess bent on immortality—a yacht-load of Caribbean pirates. What can possibly go wrong?

3D Super PIG

Please join me in welcoming a super lady to Five on Friday…Jean Pamplin. Today, she shares her 3D SUPER PIG Coloring Comic Book. It has large pictures as well as small, so it’s good for younger kids as well as older. Blank pages are also included for the artist to draw their own pictures. Be sure and check it out on Amazon. You’ll find the link at the end of the post.

Five on Friday

You open front door and find penguin wearing a cowboy hat, what does he say?

“I got here as fast as I could.”

Ann: That’s one of the best answers I gotten to that question!

Describe yourself in one word.

“Interested.”

Ann: I think you could have also answered this question…Interesting, because you are a very interesting person!

What is your greatest fear?

There is a perfect book about me in Heaven. Since I haven’t read it, my greatest fear is that I am going to be in the stage of rewrites until I miss the part where I am all I can be and have my arms full of blessings.

Ann: That should be an interesting read!

Last three books read.

1.) The Bible is an ongoing read for me. John 21:25 basically says that the world could not contain the books written if all of Jesus’ deeds/words/actions should be written. I like imagining the unsaid things.

2.) I speed read and love research. So, if I’m reading fiction, it’ll likely be a historically enhanced fiction. One of the three last books I read was Louis L’Amour’s book, Silver Canyon. I confiscated it from my son because I wanted to restudy L’Amour’s style of writing, plus there is a great deal of controversy on how to open a book these days. Is action, dialogue, character or place development more important and what about Point of View?. Why is L’Amour one of the best-read authors of modern times? His settings fairly weep with color and attention to detail. The reader can ride with one strong character both physically and mentally from beginning to end. Good and/or bad choices stitch the work together. It’s a simple life story, with a plot just complicated enough to entertain and an ending that leaves you feeling like you could be a hero too. Walla, a mass market treasure.
In an earlier read of L’Amour’s The Lonesome Gods, his characters point out a writer’s obligation which I reread occasionally for prosperity’s sake.
“…if he is to make a living, he must do more than write. His book must sell, also.”
“…surely the stores will do that!”
“…no doubt they will carry a few copies…but why should they be bought? What is to make somebody come to that store and buy his book of all that are available? He must give them a reason. He must somehow excite their interest, and then the book must hold that interest.”

3.) Dedicated to a Swedish Death Cleanse since reading about it in a Mary Jane’s Farm magazine, I have been trying to take more stuff out of the house than I take in. In wondering why I’d kept a fairly old Historical Romance titled Moonstruck Madness by Laurie McBain, I picked it up and read, recalling that I had taken her idea of a heroine who was subjected to helping her family by becoming a moonlighting robber dressed out as a sword-carrying man. I used that idea in a play concerning coffee where the coffee became the treasure stolen in a time when women were not necessarily allowed the privilege of drinking coffee. The sign of a good book is that it can be entertaining more than once. McBain accomplished that and I set it back on the shelf for perhaps another read down the line.

Name a strong memory from childhood that stuck with you and why.

I dedicate this answer to my younger brother whom I ragged on continuously until one day without my realizing it, he had grown up. In the middle of my usual picking opportunity, he turned around and grabbed me by the collar and lifted me off the ground. I was staring my Waterloo in the face when he suddenly set me back down without giving me my well-deserved award. But I did learn my lesson.

Ann: Sounds like a smart boy!

Share a favorite quote

“Well, I didn’t make you crawl up on the roof.” That from my oldest sister who convinced me at the age of three or so to crawl up on the roof of one of our farm outbuildings. My dad had to crawl up and pry me off the peak. Until quite recently, I didn’t connect that with my unreasonable fear of heights. Of course, another favorite quote expelled from the circle of her laughing mouth was her memory of having hoed into a bumble bee nest. “Boy, you sure did run.” Why is it, you can remember quotes like these?

Ann: I like that you quoted family members. After all, those memories stay with us longer than any quote we might read.

Do you have a secret you’ve never told? Answer yes or no.

Yes, and why would I tell it now?

Ann: Never had this question answered with a “no,” seems we all have secrets.

Poet, Skip Hughes

Today, I welcome Mr. Skip Hughes to Five on Friday. Be sure and read his bio at the end of the post, because you’ll be sure to get a chuckle. Which is appropriate, because the name of his book is Chuckleberry Chutney! I met Skip several years ago when I joined Northeast Texas Writing Organization.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/1625492103/

https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/chuckleberry-chutney-skip-hughes/1125135663?ean=9781625492104

Skip Hughes writes poetry that should be read and enjoyed, as distinguished from that which must be studied and puzzled about. Skip’s poems tend to be humorous or iconoclastic, to be laughed at or cried over, sometimes both at once. To get the idea, when you first pick up Skip’s book of poems, Chuckleberry Chutney, go straight to page thirteen and read the poem aloud. Do not hurry. Read carefully. Listen to the sounds while you read the words.

FIVE ON FRIDAY

You’re a new color in the crayon box. What color are you and why?
“Foreseeable Fuchsia,” for the pun of it.

Ann: Ha, ha, ha!!

What was the most romantic thing your partner ever did for you? Have you put it in a book?
Without speaking, she encouraged me in making the first definitive move. She handed me the match, so that I would light the fire. Not in a book yet. Good idea.

Ann: Not in a book, but I bet you’ve written some poems about her.

What is your all-time favorite quote?
Henry David Thoreau: “If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music he hears, however measured or far away.”

Ann: Now I know where your email moniker came from!

Who plays you in a film of your life?
Harpo Marx.

Ann: Excellent choice!

 Who is your avatar?
Bugs Bunny.

Ann: Another good choice!

Skip Hughes is a professional actor, teacher, and writer. He has taught history, literature, mathematics, physics, and theatre at the college level. His first book was a physics lab manual. His first book of poetry, Chuckleberry Chutney, is available on amazon and Barnes and Noble.

Skip attended graduate school on campus, at a major state university in every state beginning with the letter “O,” in reverse alphabetical order and all in different subjects, which may be a unique academic credential. All of this was happenstance, unplanned unless by a higher power.

Skip has visited all fifty states and lived in eleven of them, and he has visited four of the seven continents and resided in three of those. Think of him as a madabout-gadabout, ever eagerly anticipating the next adventure. Does he run away from something? Does he try to run from himself? Stay tuned.

A widower, Skip now resides either in Indiana or Texas. At this writing, he is not certain which of the two it is, only that it can’t be both. While you laugh and/or cry over Chuckleberry Chutney, watch for his next book of poems, Days of Daze and Daisies.

Secret Desires by J. L. Regen

Today, I welcome J. L. Regen to Five on Friday. She is sharing her first contemporary romance book. Be sure and check it out, and read the answers to her five questions!

A contemporary romance from the heart

Nothing in Margo Simmons’s life comes easy. She can’t claim the inheritance on a condo apartment her uncle has left to her until she is gainfully employed in a job for a year. She meets the man of her dreams but anguishes over a loving relationship because he is still emotionally tied to his deceased wife. With great difficulty, she becomes the guardian to a recently orphaned child she had been tutoring. Margo evolves from an insecure, newbie elementary teacher into a woman determined to fulfill the secret desires locked in her heart. My story speaks to anyone who has suffered a loss and had to start over.

J.L. Regen’s book was inspired by a real life story of lovers who join hearts against many odds. She lives in the New York metropolitan area, is a published photojournalist, has short suspense stories online, and has taught English as a Second Language to students around the globe. This is her first contemporary romance. She has also published three nonfiction books and is crafting a historical suspense set in World War II. Her photography is archived in the New York Historical Society.  Her short stories have appeared in online mystery and suspense publications.

FIVE ON FRIDAY

Name three things that make you cry.

Children suffering from cancer. Children in war-torn countries. People who pollute the earth.

Ann: Those are certainly things that can make us all cry.

List a favorite quote

We have nothing to fear but fear itself—Winston Churchill

Ann: So True.

If you described yourself in one word, what would it be?

Determined

Ann: To be a writer, you have to be determined!

If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?

It would be Paris—the perfumes, the sights, the food, the language-magnificent.

Ann: Can’t argue with this choice. It’s also romantic!

What is the loveliest thing you’ve ever seen?

The birthday card that my husband sent to me today. Full of feeling.

Ann: Aw…that is so sweet. It really is the small things in life that make us happy.
